Embedded system for inspecting metals
The smartEddy 4.0 embedded version of the company's smartEddy system is designed to be integrated into the control system of automated production lines. The PC-based, fully automated, contact- and operator-free system is basically comprised of an instrument module, test soft ware, sensor (including surface, encircling and bobbin) and an embedded computer.
Depending on the material being inspected, users can select any test frequency from 0 Hz to 25 MHz. For instance, a 1-Hz test can penetrate more than 3" of aluminum, while a 25-MHz test can inspect wires and tubes of a few thousandths of an inch in diameter. Additionally, the system features a 5,000-Hz bandwidth, so it can make complex "accept/reject" decisions in 50 microseconds. The company says this means that tests can be performed as fast as 30,000 feet/minute or as high as several thousand parts per second.
Typical applications include fasteners, assemblies, weldments, stampings, forged and extruded parts, continuous product, casting, powder metallurgy and heat exchangers. The system can detect material discontinuities such as cracks, seams, laps, corrosion and weld such as cracks, seams, laps, corrosion and weld defects; check for proper surface preparation including coating and plating thickness; conduct heat treatment testing for hardness, temper, quench and microstructure; exactly pinpoint missing operations like threads and holes; evaluate material properties from composition and density to conductivity and permeability; and provide measurements for dimensions, radii, lengths and wall thickness.
